Strong winds and a tornado hit Cyprus!

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

A very rare occurrence in Cyprus, but a freak tornado ripped through the capital city, Nicosia on Friday. Along with heavy rains causing damage & chaos. Uprooted trees, blocked roads, flying debris smashing shop fronts and associated mess…

A little over 10 people were injured, ‘thank god we had no victims’ said Panayiotis Kyprianou, mayor of the Nicosia suburb of Latsia. The local authorities and emergency services should be praised for their action and assistance.

Meteorologists suggest that these storms and unusually high winds may say with us for the next 2/3 days. This extreme weather is indeed very rare in Cyprus, especially holiday areas such as Peyia, in Paphos which has seen strong winds and threats of a further tornado. The police have been actively warning residents and holiday makers to the area and blocking the roads in dangerous places.

Although we enjoy 300 days of sunshine a year, it goes to show still need to protect our home & belongings from the elements and quickly put right any damage caused by such events. If you’ve had any problems as a result of the weather and need help with roof leaks, water tanks, plumbing or electrics in the Paphos, Peyia or Polis areas, please give us a call where we’ll do everything we can to get you back to normal as soon as possible.

Nick’s Tips & Advice – Time to check your roof, balconies & terraces!

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Last night and this morning Paphos has seen it’s first rain showers for months… okay, we’re not talking about rains like the UK’s Summer – but you’ll still find some surface water around before it’s soon evaporated by the closely following sunshine!

The reason for this post, isn’t to boast about the weather & living in Cyprus – but to highlight the importance of checking the drains on your balcony, terrace and even roof… as we live in a dusty country, after a long Summer these drains can easily be blocked with sand, dust, leaves, dead birds, any foreign objects which stops the surface water clearing. Any build up of water can only lead to a disaster inside your house, whether its slow penetration and water ingress which cause damp patches, black mould and flaking paint, or in some cases we’ve seen water flowing down the internal walls! This is usually were the water has risen over the level of the skirting tiles on a roof terrace – sadly they aren’t usually tiled / sealed very well and offers little protection.

This quick regular check which can take a few minutes really could save hundreds of pounds in repairs and clean up, not to mention the stress & inconvenience.

Should you have any concerns on your property, or need some assistance in checking all over – give us a call, we’ve got ladders to reach any roof, rods & chemicals to unblock most drains and no job scares us.

Please forward this post to your friends in Cyprus & tell your neighbours…

If you live abroad and want us to check your property, please call or email anytime. In the same visit and call-out fee, we’ll make a general check of the property, windows & doors secured, no signs of damp, break-ins, check the water & electric is on and anything else you need.

Testimonial from Tony in Tala, Paphos

Tony & Denise of Tala, Paphos wrote about Nicks Maintenance Services

“We are the proud owners of a 3 bedroom villa with private swimming pool in Paphos, the property is currently rented out on a long term basis. Our tenants have lived there for a few months and last week reported some problems with the air conditioning; the units were blowing cold air, but the fan speed was very low and it took a long time for them to cool the room!

Our management agent, Hestia Services, part of the Hestia Group immediately arranged for Nicks Maintenance Services to visit the property and service the units. We were delighted to learn Nick had been and fixed everything in under 24 hours and our tenants were very happy that the air conditioning was working better than ever…

Also on a recent occasion, our pool man informed us there was a small leak in the pump room… our first thought was to call Nick and ask if he could take a look. Once again, he’s surprised us and fixed everything the next day – on his inspection ‘in-passing’ he straight away replaced a number of the old joints in the pipes where the rubber seals were getting old and brittle.

Nick’s standard call out fee is very fair and reasonable for the speed, peace of mind and comfort in having their company carry out the work. We have confidence that they won’t be recurring faults, which is essential when you are renting a property”…

Testimonial from Roger

Roger & Catherine in Sea Caves wrote about Nicks Maintenance Services;

“We purchased a villa in Sea Caves, Paphos in August 2007 – a huge attraction of the property was a roof garden with private jacuzzi… This seemed an idyllic dream to us, having a villa in Cyprus, right by the sea with a jacuzzi to relax in and watch the stars twinkling above!

Only for reality to set in and find the jacuzzi wouldn’t work! We visited Cyprus 3 or 4 times over the following year and not once were we able to use the jacuzzi ourselves – the electrics would cut out, it wouldn’t’ turn on, problems with the temperature controls, etc… Our neighbour was looking after the property for us, who did everything he could to help, assisting with chasing the developers who sold us the jacuzzi – they of course would pass blame onto their supplier and so on…

After numerous attempts by the developers own electricians and plumbers in Paphos to rectify the problems, eventually the supplier sent their engineers to inspect the jacuzzi and ‘parts’ were sent back…

Finally, we thought it was all resolved and we’d be able to make full use of the jacuzzi in February – a month you’d really appreciate it! But no, once again, nothing, we’ve spent a further week in our own villa and still can’t use the jacuzzi.

Even more frustrating, we’ve disappointed numerous holiday makers and for a period of time had to advertise the property WITHOUT a jacuzzi…

The subsequent visit from the engineers presented us with quotes for a new control panel, etc, to the region of 3,000 Euros!!!

At this stage, shocked and very upset at the thought of having to spend a further 3,000 Euros on a jacuzzi which really should have been under some form of warranty, guarantee or cover… We were recommended by our letting agents, Hestia Holidays, to call Nick White of Nicks Maintenance Services, Paphos. Therefore, willing to try anything at this stage, we phoned Nick, explained the situation and he arranged to visit the villa with our neighbour within 48 hours and take a look…

Within 1 hour of being at our villa – Nick rang… at first we couldn’t believe it when he confidently said ‘all fixed’… He explained the problem; in simple terms so both me & my wife could understand, told us how he’d repaired the jacuzzi and all within his standard call out fee!

We can’t emphasize enough, our appreciation to Nick and how delighted we were to finally use our own jacuzzi – after nearly 1 year of buying the villa!

Nick, we sincerely thank you for your rapid service, honest & fair charges and we will be sure to use your services again in the future and recommend you to our growing number of friends in Cyprus – you genuinely did save the day, not to mention 3,000 Euros.

Now we do have our dream in Cyprus and are thoroughly enjoy it – we did raise our glasses to ‘Nicks Maintenance Services’ on its first use!”…
